Background of the study
This study evaluates the accuracy of translation in Hausa language subtitling for Nollywood films in Kano. Nollywood films, widely appreciated across Nigeria, have increasingly been subtitled in local languages, including Hausa, to broaden their audience and enhance cultural accessibility (Sani, 2023). Accurate subtitling is essential to preserve the film’s narrative, humor, and cultural references, ensuring that the original meaning is effectively conveyed to Hausa-speaking viewers. In Kano, where Hausa is predominantly spoken, subtitling practices must overcome challenges such as idiomatic expressions, cultural nuances, and rapid dialogue delivery. This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining content analysis of subtitled films, surveys of audience comprehension, and interviews with professional translators. The research critically assesses the translation accuracy and explores the factors that contribute to errors, including time constraints and technological limitations. By analyzing these issues, the study seeks to propose improvements in subtitling practices, aiming to enhance both the quality of translations and the viewing experience for Hausa audiences (Abubakar, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing use of Hausa subtitles in Nollywood films, issues regarding translation accuracy persist in Kano. Inaccurate translation can lead to misinterpretations of cultural contexts and narrative subtleties, which diminishes the viewer’s experience (Sani, 2023). Challenges such as literal translations, loss of idiomatic meaning, and synchronization issues are common, often resulting from the absence of standardized subtitling guidelines. Moreover, professional translators face constraints related to time and resource availability, which further exacerbates the problem. This study aims to identify these challenges and assess their impact on the overall quality of Hausa language subtitling in Nollywood films, while proposing actionable strategies to enhance translation accuracy and cultural relevance (Abubakar, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the current state of translation accuracy in Hausa subtitles for Nollywood films.

To identify common errors and their causes in the translation process.

To recommend best practices for improving subtitling accuracy.

Research questions:

What is the level of translation accuracy in Hausa subtitles for Nollywood films?

What are the primary challenges faced by translators in this context?

How can subtitling practices be improved to enhance translation quality?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the quality of translation in Hausa subtitling for Nollywood films, a key medium for cultural dissemination. Improved subtitling practices will enhance audience comprehension and cultural appreciation, benefiting translators, filmmakers, and viewers alike. The findings will guide the development of standardized subtitling guidelines, ensuring that cultural nuances and narrative integrity are maintained (Sani, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating Hausa language subtitling in Nollywood films in Kano, focusing on translation accuracy and error analysis.

Definitions of terms:

Subtitling: The process of displaying translated text on a film screen.

Translation accuracy: The degree to which a translation faithfully represents the original content.

Idiomatic expressions: Phrases that have a figurative meaning different from their literal interpretation.
